So who exactly were the Cynics? And what did they believe?ģ. Unsurprisingly, Cynicism has gained a reputation for eccentricity ever since it first appeared in Ancient Greece. The Cynics lived ascetic lifestyles, often dwelling in the streets and engaging in public defecation, much like dogs. While there’s some debate about why the Cynics adopted this name, many academics believe that the word was hurled at Cynic philosophers due to their bizarre and unconventional behavior. The word ‘cynic’ derives from the Ancient Greek kynikos meaning ‘dog-like’ or kyôn (dog). Like many words, cynicism has evolved over thousands of years to mean something very different to its original use. ![]() Back then, it referred to philosophers with a very specific set of beliefs (which we’ll explore in more detail below). The word derives from Cynicism, a school of philosophy which first appeared in Ancient Greece. In fact, the word ‘cynical’ has long and ancient etymological roots. In other words, if somebody describes you as cynical, then it isn’t really much of a compliment! However, the term hasn’t always carried such negative overtones. Today, the term ‘cynical’ means something along the lines of ‘motivated by self-interest’ and/or ‘mistrusting of people and their intentions’. The Meaning of the Term ‘Cynicism’ Has Changed Over the Centuries Alexander visiting Diogenes, late 18th–early 19th century, author unknown, via the Met Museum. The four walls and roof of a regular house were luxuries he could easily forego.Ģ. He found a large clay wine jar to shelter inside and quickly realized that he could live in the jar quite comfortably. But when the friend failed to respond to his letter, Diogenes simply roamed the streets. He was banished from the city for defacing coins, and arrived in Athens with no prospects and nowhere to stay.Īccording to one source, Diogenes wrote to a friend of his and asked if they knew of any available accommodation in Athens. He was supposedly one of Antisthenes’ first pupils, eventually dedicating his entire life to the practice of Cynicism.ĭiogenes began this process when he first arrived in Athens after being exiled from his home town of Sinope (a coastal city in modern day Turkey). Diogenes was likely born around 404 BC and died in 320 BC. Only a few scraps of information exist today, but we can still piece together some of his biography. ![]() Most of what we know about Diogenes comes from later philosophers who didn’t know him during his lifetime. Diogenes of Sinope Was a Strange Man Diogenes by John William Waterhouse He also wrote some instrumental music for the movie’s score with collaborator Jonathan Elias. Taylor also launched his first solo effort in 1985, recording the single “I Do What I Do…” for the soundtrack to the movie 9½ Weeks starring Kim Basinger. With the guidance of producer Bernard Edwards, they released one album, The Power Station, which produced the hit singles “Some Like It Hot” and the T.Rex cover song “Bang a Gong (Get It On)”. John Taylor and Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor joined forces with former Chic drummer Tony Thompson and Robert Palmer, who earlier met at Duran Duran’s charity concert at Aston Villa football ground in 1983, to form the band The Power Station. In 1985, after recording the theme song to the Bond movie A View to a Kill, Duran Duran split into two side projects. His first band was called Shock Treatment. In his early teen years, he discovered music, choosing Roxy Music as his favourite band, and before long was collecting records and teaching himself to play the piano. As a child, he attended Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic school and the Abbey High School, in Redditch, wore glasses (due to severe myopia, over -10 dioptres), enjoyed James Bond movies and was interested in the hobby of wargaming with hand-painted model soldiers. Taylor recorded a dozen solo releases (albums, EPs, and video projects) through his private record label B5 Records over the next four years, had a lead role in the movie Sugar Town, and made appearances in a half dozen other film projects. Taylor played with Duran Duran from its founding in 1978 until 1997, when he left to pursue a solo recording and film career. Duran Duran was one of the most popular bands in the world during the 1980s due in part to their music videos which played in heavy rotation in the early days of MTV. Namely, Period Prediction for women and guided relaxation sessions. While not all new features are ready from the get-go, there are some that are available now, along with the continuous heart rate monitoring I just mentioned. Oura Ring is now capable of detecting SpO2 levels, 24/7 heart rate monitoring, period prediction, and more. I enjoyed having this information available to me, as it is nice to see when I was able to "relax." Additionally, the Oura Ring can now measure Restorative Time with your heart rate data, which is considered relaxation time during the day that helps you recover from stress and strain. If you don't do a live rate check in the app, the Oura Ring will take measurements every five minutes to conserve battery life. The new Oura Ring fixes this issue, as it now has 24/7 heart rate monitoring. One of my issues with the previous version of the Oura Ring was the fact that it would not measure your heart rate during the day - only at night while you slept. Oura Ring 3 App Screenshots (Image credit: iMore) If you're doing good in an area, it will be blue, but if something needs your attention, then it'll be red. When you drill down into these two areas, you can see things like resting heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), body temperature, respiratory rate, REM/light/deep sleep, sleep efficiency, restfulness, and more. But the app basically gives you a Readiness score based on your Sleep and Activity data from the previous day. The new Oura Ring fixes some issues I had with the previous generation.Īs I covered the Oura app in my second generation review, I won't go too much into detail about it. ![]() ![]() But once you look at the inside of the ring, you'll see that it is equipped with several new sensors, including three LEDs (green, red, and infrared). And if you're still using the second generation Oura Ring, then you can continue to use the app without a membership fee - you'll just be limited to the type of data accessible in the app. This includes sleep tracking with sleep stage details (REM, light, deep sleep), nap tracking, body temperature sensing, activity tracking, and syncing with Apple Health workouts. And the app has moved from being a free companion app to a monthly subscription model. However, there has been a bit of controversy with the new Oura Smart Ring, as most of the new features won't be available until sometime later this year. The companion app is also getting beefed up with new content, women's and reproductive health, and improved sleep algorithms. New sensors allow it to measure your blood oxygen (SpO2) levels, 24/7 daytime heart rate (previously it was only at night), workout heart rate, restorative time, Period Prediction, improved temperature sensing, and so much more. This new version of the ring touts even more sensors without increasing the overall size. ![]() However, I was not aware that the company had already been developing the next generation of the Oura Smart Ring, which came out around the start of the last holiday season. I had reviewed the second-generation Oura Smart Ring and praised its features at the time. In recent years, the success of marketing to a range of body-types is no more evident than in the launch of Savage X Fenty in 2018. As brands like Aerie shifted their marketing in line with a slowly more inclusive turning-tide, the casting of the VS shows and campaigns remained unchanged. When you store a CHAR value, MySQL pads its value with spaces to the length that you declared. The length of the CHAR data type can be any value from 0 to 255. You’ll get a better performance in comparison with VARCHAR in this case. If the data that you want to store is a fixed size, then you should use the CHAR data type. For example, CHAR(20) can hold up to 20 characters. You often declare the CHAR type with a length that specifies the maximum number of characters that you want to store. ![]() The CHAR data type is a fixed-length character type in MySQL. (that is, 70 number positions)įor both MySQL and Postgres, NUMERIC is an alias for the DECIMAL type.Summary: in this tutorial, you will learn about MySQL CHAR data type and how to apply it in your database table design. The DECIMAL type in MySQL is equivalent to DECIMAL in postgres, except that in postgres, the type does not impose an arbtrary limit on the precision, whereas in MySQL the maximum precision is (i believe) 70. The FLOAT type in MySQL should be equivalent to REAL in postgres (and REAL in SQLite too) (but indeed MySQL's BLOB types also map to that) I think the MySQL VARBINARY data type is best comparable to PG's BYTEA datatype. The BIT datatypes in MySQL and PG have roughly the same semantics, but in MySQL the maximum length of the BIT data type is 64 (bits) In SQLite, VARCHAR and CHAR map both to TEXT The actual length specifier is expressed in the number of characters, so if you have a multi-byte character set, you have to divide the maximum lenght by the maximum number of characters to get the theoretical maximum length specified for that characterset. In MySQL these types can have a maximum of a little less than 64kb, in pg 1Gb (bytes). Semantically, VARCHAR in MySQL and PG, and CHAR in MySQL and PG are the same, but in MySQL these types have a much shorter maximum length. I am missing INTEGER (alias INT) for MySQL. Postgres also has a BIGSERIAL type, which is the same as SERIAL but with a BIGINT type instead of an INT type. In postgres, the SERIAL datatype results in an INTEGER column, and this will about the same as MySQL's INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT This is roughly equivalent to BIGINT PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT So apps may or may not be portable - at least it is no drop in replacement.įinally, for the last line in your tabl I think the SQLite phrase should read: INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT It looks like the pg BOOLEAN type uses string literal notation. In MySQL, TRUE and FALSE map to 1 and 0 integer values. You may or may not be able to port apps depending on what they use as boolean literals. The MySQL BOOLEAN (alias BOOL, alias TINYINT(1) ) is not compatible with the pg boolean type. I would avoid it, but otherwise map it to INTEGER too. MEDIUMINT in MySQL is an odd duck (3 bytes). MySQL PostgreSQL SQLiteĬolumnname INT columnname SERIAL INTEGER PRIMARY Here is what I have so far, but I'm afraid it's not done and I need some people with more experience to help me finish any missing types. I am trying to find some way to relate column types across the the most used Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. |
